High Wind and Tornado Plans

Generic High Wind Plan

This following recommendations are for employees, students and visitors.

To avoid flying debris and to minimize damage during high winds:

  • Minimize movement and travel outdoors
  • Close windows and doors leading outside
  • Close curtains and blinds on outside windows
  • Avoid wide span roof areas such as auditoriums and cafeterias
  • Move mobile items stored outside to indoor storage
  • Secure any items that cannot be moved inside
  • Be careful opening exterior doors
  • Be cautious about downed power lines, tree limbs, and debris on roads
  • Be alert for animals who have escaped from farms and zoos

Generic Tornado Plan

This applies to employees, students, and visitors.

Tornado Alert

Tornado Alerts are issued if severe thunderstorms and / or tornadoes are likely. Alerts often cover large areas for a few hours. If a local storm or tornado alert is issued, monitor information sources and local media.

Tornado Warning

Following tornado warnings, sirens may be sounded. Find shelter immediately.

ACTIONS

A great danger during a tornado is flying debris. If you hear a tornado warning or see a tornado:

If indoors:

  • Stay away from windows / doors leading outside
  • Immediately seek shelter in a basement or designated storm shelter
  • In buildings without a basement, seek shelter in an interior room under heavy furniture (table, desk)
  • Avoid wide span roof areas such as auditoriums, gymnasiums, cafeterias, and large hallways
  • Remain in shelter until an all clear has sounded

If outdoors

  • If possible, seek immediate shelter in the nearest building
  • If away from any buildings, seek shelter in the nearest ditch or low area
  • If in a vehicle, do not attempt to race a tornado. Stop and seek shelter in the nearest building, ditch or low area

Special instructions

Be alert for these hazards, and if you find them, notify authorities.

  • Downed power lines, fractured gas lines, and broken water pipes
  • Hail damage and flash flooding
  • Escaped large or dangerous animals
