Expert Model of Expert Modeling

Phase 1: Eliciting Competence

Hi-tech systems are as much about people as about technology. Although user friendly are key words in sales and marketing, rapid acquisition of competence is an essential challenge. Martyn Carruthers

Neither motivation nor knowledge ensure competence. Poor performance is often due to disabling beliefs, influences, trauma or low quality mentorship than to lack of motivation or knowledge.

Systemic Expert Modeling combines systemic coaching, accelerated learning, value theory, typological analysis, behavioral psychology and management science to rapidly duplicate excellence. Expert Modeling is used to decompose skills, create models and transfer competence, as part of management and organizational development packages.

Expert Modeling, in conjunction with systemic coaching and accelerated learning, can dissolve performance blocks. Expert Modeling provides the essential "know how", instead of more "know about" (which can be hastened with our Accelerated Learning). Expert Modeling provides a rapid and cost-effective performance boost to both individual and organizational productivity.

Phase 1 of Expert Modeling creates a knowledge base of behavioral micro-skills that can later be compiled to create a total model of competence. This knowledge-base allows the components of expert strategies to be explored rather than creating hasty solutions that may prevent further learning.

A. Identify experts

  1. Interview management
  2. Collect performance reviews
  3. Review performance records
  4. Identify several experts
  5. Identify some average performers
  6. Dissolve objections

B. Elicit components of expert skills

  1. Observe high performers
  2. Partition each task
  3. Observe and record all components of expertise

C. Decompose expert skills

  1. Identify behavioral differences
  2. Divide complex skills into manageable pieces
  3. Define the boundaries and scope of each skill

D. Decompose an expert model

  1. Observe and record behaviors
  2. Ask the expert for verbal descriptions
  3. Observe and record the markers of internal processes
  4. Elicit and record relevant internal dialogue
  5. Increase knowledge base with skill refinement techniques

Conclusion of Phase 1

Phase 1 of Expert Modeling decomposes expert performance into a knowledge base of behavioral micro-skills. Phase 2 tests, optimize and refines these skill components, and sequences them into testable models of competence. When tests indicate accelerated transfer of competence, phase 3 transfers the strategies of expertise, using accelerated learning and systemic coaching.
