Take a walk around the village with Google Maps
(Croatia has eight national parks, ten nature parks and two
natural reserves. About 10% of Croatia is legally protected countryside).
Lovely summer temperatures (the lowlands are HOT in summer)
The Mediterranean coast is about a one hour drive.
The A1 motorway is nearby (use Vrbovsko or Ravna Gora exits).
This stone house is a registered protected cultural heritage and
is shown on local postcards. It has half meter thick limestone walls built on bedrock and is
structurally sound. The house is about 100 years old and belonged to the village blacksmith.
We have enjoyed
this house for five summers and renovated it more each year. A wood-burning
stove with a brick chimney in the 30m² (320 sq ft) living room keeps the house warm on Autumn evenings and on winter
vacations (great walking and cross-country skiing).
The 18m² (190 sq ft) kitchen has two windows and fittings for a wood burning
kitchen stove. A full
attic (insulated but not renovated) has 60m² (640 sq ft) space for more bedrooms, storage, etc. The garden
includes a stone ruin that could be rebuilt into a guest-house or garage with minimal
paperwork (as it was a barn when we bought it).
An oak and glass double-door leads from the balcony to a 8m² (86 sq ft) hallway, with
doors to the kitchen, bedroom and living room. We combined two rooms to make the 30m² living
room, in which we could put a heavy curtain around a sofa bed for guests.
A new septic tank and system was installed (2012), the living room fitted
with double glazed windows (2010) and a new ceiling (2012). We started renovating the bathroom / toilet, which has a WC, sink,
fittings for a shower and
a built-in cabinet.
The septic tank, plumbing, windows and ceilings were professionally installed, and the
rooms professionally painted. The beautiful old interior doors were professionally restored
It is a comfortable home for any season.
A main floor extension provides a useful work space for crafts and storage,
and the basement (konoba) level has another 90m² of
space that we use for gardening equipment, firewood and storage. We
replaced the outside stairs and
balcony railings in 2012. You can store about 4 m³ (140 cu ft) of firewood under the front balcony.
The productive garden is sheltered by a stone enclosure (the foundation of a barn) and
has a large concrete water cistern
with a manual pump. The garden produces an abundance of jasmine and other
perennial flowers, tomatoes, pumpkins, blackcurrants and plums. The established herbs
include oregano, tarragon, parsley,
and lemon balm (melissa).
A white wisteria dominates the NE corner of the house.
field provided our potatoes, beans, peas, corn, lettuce etc.
(We fertilized both garden and field with compost, wood ashes and mulch - no
chemical fertilizers or pesticides.) You can enjoy very tasty and healthy vegetables!
The road to Kuti village ends in the village -
there is no through traffic so the village is quiet and safe for children and pets.
Fresh bread (often still warm)
is sold in the village most mornings - and fresh fish twice each week. A small
local dairy provides fresh milk and cheese, and some neighbors sell eggs
and rakia - a local brandy.
Being here has been good.
