It is easier for both health professionals and most
of their patients to use drugs as a substitute for change.
Self-medication with alcohol or nicotine, or prescription
anti-depressants and stimulants are easier than applying intelligence,
focus and analytical skills to relationship problems. Drugs
are also cheaper for the patient (in the short term) and more profitable
for the health professionals.
But the long-term consequences and side-effects of
psychoactive drugs are unacceptable to an increasing number of professionals and
some patients.
When medication may be dangerous
Some solutions are worse than the problems. Some cures are worse than diseases.
Some common medications can cause symptoms of mental health disorders.
Many people
struggling to improve themselves and their lives are confounded by confusion, depression and insomnia.
Although there are other causes, this describes some mental disorders caused by common medications
such as pain relievers and tranquilizers.
|
CAUTION |
If your physician
prescribes a medication, you can consult the physician about the
side-effects listed by the manufacturer of that medication, and about
any plans to evaluate other side-effects. |
Every medication contains chemicals that may cause side effects.
Some side effects are physical, such as nausea or blurred vision, and some side
effects affect mood and emotions. If someone has a mental disorder,
check if medications cause the symptoms, by listing what medications are taken,
and comparing the medication history to the symptom history. Ask medical professionals
about the side effects of any drugs that they prescribe for you or your family.
|
CAUTION |
Ask your physician if
he or she would prescribe your
medication for one of their own family members. |
Food allergies, environmental conditions
and relationships may induce mental disorders. Observe when the symptoms
are worst. Discover what patterns of medications, food, relationship
behavior or actions precede the symptoms.
Some medication side-effects increase
the symptom that the medication was supposed to control. This may lead people
to take ever more of a symptom-producing drug in an effort to control that
symptom. Over 100 million prescriptions for mood-changing drugs are made
annually in North America alone! If only 1% of these prescriptions are to
alleviate the undiagnosed side-effects of other drugs, that's one million
meaningless and expensive prescriptions for harmful psychoactive drugs every year.
Common drugs such as Darvon®, Demerol® and
Percodan® are addictive narcotics that can impair brain function, cause mood swings and disturb sleep.

Feedback |
I talked to a few
doctors about my son's medications. I received very
different answers and did some research. It seems that drug companies
provide most post-graduate training for doctors, who only prescribe
drugs that they know about. ... I found a doctor who
changed my son's medications with amazingly positive results. My son
was allergic to a common filler agent used in many drugs. PA, Idaho |
Consequences of Medication
Obtain reference materials about the potential side
effects of medications or psychoactive drugs... including how they may
affect a client's behavior during a therapeutic coaching session. Many addictive drugs
are taken to control pain, although non-drug methods can be equally effective.

Food Allergies & Mental Health Symptoms
Some mental disorders are caused by
allergies to common foods, such as sugar, corn, wheat, milk products or
potatoes. Many people who are allergic or sensitive to common foods display
mental symptoms, such as confusion, rather than physical symptoms such as a rash.
Other common causes of mental health problems include intolerance to food
additives or preservatives. Sometimes, food allergies and intolerances result in
depression or hyperactivity.

Although many apparent mental disorders
are sensitivities and allergies to home, work or environmental contaminants,
vitamin deficiencies and stress; the most common cause seems to be relationship issues.
Clarifying and resolving relationship issues may bring a near-miraculous and
drug-free alleviation of physical disease and mental health symptoms. Many articles about solving
relationship problems are available here.
